Edwin L. Mechem was born in Alamogordo, New Mexico in 1912. He was admitted to the New Mexico Bar in 1939, and served as a land surveyor for the U.S. Reclamation Service (1932-1933), and as an investigator for the Federal Bureau of Investigations during World War II. Edwin Leard Mechem was born to Edwin Mechem and Eunice Leard Mechem on 2 July 1912 in Alamogordo, New Mexico. He was educated at New Mexico State University and the University of Arkansas Law School. He practiced law in Las Cruces; was an FBI agent during WWII; was elected to the state legislature in 1946; and served four terms as governor of New Mexico (1951-54; 1957-58; 1961-62).
